About Disabilities
Developmental Disabilities is a term used to describe lifelong conditions attributable to mental and/or physical impairments that manifest prior to age twenty-two.
People with developmental disabilities include those diagnosed with conditions such as cerebral palsy, epilepsy, autism or Down syndrome as well as those who have incurred a traumatic brain injury. Developmental disabilities can result from a variety of physical, environmental and even social causes: brain injury, genetic disorders, lack of nutrition and child abuse to name a few.
People with developmental disabilities exhibit a range of behaviors varying from mild to moderate to severe. Children, adults and families dealing with developmental disabilities benefit from access to individual and group services, including support with housing, employment, education and health care as well as advocacy. Those who enjoy the love and support of family and community can find great fulfillment in life and enrich the lives of those around them immensely.
